The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes way back into history, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, sadly, these early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians are some tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient cooks made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an eruption in cookery books, some of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
