The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius tells us how the early Romans used a good variety of spices and herbs, including some familiar names like basil, mint and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new tastes created a surge in recipe books, most of which are kept safe in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
