The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the 1300s ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of the period. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. However, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. When we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications were increasing in popularity mostly due to more people being able to read, leisure time and having more disposable income. |
