The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` far back into history, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise like thyme, rue and dill. Over the following few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
