Here's another potato pancake tip. Take cold mashed potatoes,
(instant are fine) and toss in a couple of eggs. Whip it good. Brown
a couple of tablespoons of dehydrated onion flakes in a skillet and
mix them in too. Plop the mess down on a griddle, brown both sides
and enjoy!

The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including some that we all recognise such as basil, mint and parsley. As we move on, there were two books published in the fourteenth century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals cooked for the rich and wealthy people of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs created an eruption in publications on food, some of which are now in private libraries. During the following few hundred years, the upper classes tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books are starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and having more money to spend. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
