The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. He recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he tells us how the Romans made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise like bay, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the East, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted a surge in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
