The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also recounts how the early Romans made use of a wide range of herbs, including many that are still in use today such as basil, fennel and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes caused an eruption in books on cooking, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Potato Pancakes (No Fry Latkes) recipe.
