The History of Recipes

We are able to track the history of written recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated.

As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the Romans used a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise such as bay, mint and parsley.

During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down popular recipes of the day.

The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading.
