The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into starters, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef tells us how the cooks of his times used many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like basil, fennel and parsley. During the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
