Ingredients
2 lb small red new potatoes, scrubbed
3 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 large clove garlic, peeled and forced thr, ough a press
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper to tast, e
2 tbsp minced fresh oregano or 1 ts dried, oregano crushed
Directions
Cut the potatoes in halves and place in a steamer basket. Steam in a
covered pan with water at a low boil. Steam about 20 minutes, until
the potatoes are tender. Drain and transfer to a bowl.
While the potatoes are cooking combine the olive oil, lemon juice,
garlic, salt, pepper, and oregano in a small jar.
Pour the sauce over the potatoes and stir well to coat. Let sit 5
minutes and serve.
Menu suggestion: Serve this side-dish with baked chicken or a simply

The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes way back into history, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, generally, these ancient records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. Later on, there were a couple of recipe books dating from the 1300s ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the rich and powerful of those days. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new foods and spices was responsible for an explosion in recipe manuscripts, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. For the next few years, the upper-class families of the West competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
