Ingredients
1 cup nutritional yeast flakes
1 tbsp salt
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp marjoram
1 tsp tarragon
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp rosemary
2 tsp sage
2 tsp celery seed
2 tsp thyme
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
Directions
Pulverize in a blender and store in a cool place. For gravy, buzz ~1
Tb. flavor mix and ~1 Tb. flour per 3 - 4 fl.oz. water in a blender
depending on desired thickness. Simmer or microwave, stirring
periodically until thickened. Thin with water as desired. Good broth
base -- make a veggie chickenless soup or gravy with this.

The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including a few you will know for example basil, fennel and asafoetida. For the next few years, the wealthy families of the West strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking books were greatly in demand mostly as a result of more people being able to read, leisure time and having more disposable income. The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
