Ingredients
COOKIES
1 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cup pillsbury best all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup shredded, peeled apples
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
TOPPING
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Directions
Heat waffle iron to medium-low. In large bowl, beat brown sugar and
butter until blended. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Lightly spoon
flour into measuring cup; level off. Add flour, baking powder, 1 t
cinnamon, salt and nutmeg; mix well. Stir in apples and pecans.
Spray waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray. Drop dough by heaping
teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto waffle iron. Bake 1 1/2 to 2
minutes or until cookies are keep golden brown. Immediately remove
from waffle iron; cool 1 minute on wire rack. Repeat with remaining
dough. In small bowl, combine powdered sugar and 1/4 t cinnamon; mix
well. Using powdered sugar mixture, dip or dust both sides of
slightly warm cookies. Serve warm or cool. Store in tightly covered
container.

The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found back into distant history, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are not about the indian food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the nobility of that period. Over the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. When we get to the 20th century, recipe publications are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of better eduction, more spare time and having more money. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
