The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the distant past, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful.

As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef recounts how the early Romans used a wide range of spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, rue and parsley.

During the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications were increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this site.
