The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these old cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving on, we find two interesting recipe books dating from the 14th Century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of the period. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as rosemary and coriander. These new herbs and spices prompted an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are now in private collections. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
