The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of recipes back into the far past, in fact as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, in the main part, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into starters, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he describes how the cooks of Roman times used many herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like thyme, rue and dill. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
