The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of written recipes back into distant history, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also recounts how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and dill. Later on, there are a couple of interesting cookery books from the 14th Century - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they have no connection with the indian food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an explosion in recipe publications, most of which still exist in private collections. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
