The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of `recipes` far back into the far past, in fact as far as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef informs us how the Roman chefs made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the East, such as basil and coriander. These new foods and spices led to an increase in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this San Ton Pa (Mincemeat Of Raw Fish) recipe.
