The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into the far past, at least as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are a couple of interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menues of the rich and powerful of that period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful families of the West tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe books are increasing in popularity mostly due to higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Sandwich Suggestions recipe.
