The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found far back into the distant past, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created a few documents which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius tells us how the chefs of Roman times made use of many different herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise for example thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from the East, including parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs caused a surge in publications on food, most of which still exist in private libraries. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Sardines recipe.
