The History of Recipes

Historians have tracked the existance of recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these early cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful.

During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also describes how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise like bay, mint and asafoetida.

Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

The introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site.
