The History of Recipes

Written recipes as an idea can be traced back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, in the main part, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are some books from the 1300s ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that period.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

When we get to the 20th century, cooking books were greatly in demand due to better eduction, increased leisure time and having more disposable income.

The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site.
