The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked far back into antiquity, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the ancient Romans made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as thyme, mint and dill. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs led to an increase in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private collections. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
