The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed way back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, old cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, there are two interesting recipe books from the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the time. For the next few years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
