The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` back into distant history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, generally, these early recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. Later, there were two recipe books which were published in the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the menus of the nobility of that period. During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery publications are in great demand, mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and being a little richer. |
