The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into history, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were two recipe books from the fourteenth century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are not about the curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of those days. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of the West competed to offer the best banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery publications are in great demand, due to better eduction, people having increased spare time and having more money to spend. The introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
