The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes far back into history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these early records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Closer to modern times, we find a couple of cookery books which date from the fourteenth century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of those days. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted an eruption in books on cookery, some of which are now in private libraries. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cook books were highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
