The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, there were two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these have no connection with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the upper classes of that period. During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 1900s, cookery books are increasing in popularity due to better eduction, people having more free time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
