The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these ancient records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Closer to modern times, there were a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the 1300s : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the spicy food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful of that period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Chicken Tortellini Soup recipe.
