The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the cooks of Roman times made use of many aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise such as bay, fennel and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes prompted a torrent in cookery books, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. The TV revolution brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
