The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced back into history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, fennel and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations caused an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
