The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes far back into antiquity, in fact as far back as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find some interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared for the nobility of that period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes prompted an increase in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
