The History of Recipes
Academics have traced the existence of recipes back into the far past, in fact as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the early Romans used many different spices, including a few you will know such as bay, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to an outbreak in recipe manuscripts, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
