The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including some familiar names for example bay, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused an increase in books on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private collections. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
