The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, generally, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient cooks made use of many herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations prompted an outbreak in recipe books, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. By the advent of the 20th century, cook books are increasing in popularity mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased spare time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
