The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he tells us how the early Romans made use of many herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as bay, fennel and parsley. Later, there are two books which appeared in the 1300s ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the indian curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the rich and powerful of that time. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs caused an increase in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
