The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals were split into starters, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the early Romans used many spices and herbs, including a few you will know like basil, fennel and asafoetida.

During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the advent of the 1900s, cookery books are greatly in demand as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend.

The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site.
