The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found far back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including some familiar names like bay, fennel and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused an outbreak in manuscripts on food, some of which are kept safe in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
