The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like bay, mint and parsley. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of the West strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chili Krieghauser recipe.
