The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions way back into the far past, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef describes how the Roman chefs used many aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like basil, mint and asafoetida.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes led to an eruption in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which are now in academic collections.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now.
