The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into starters, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the Romans made use of a wide range of spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, fennel and dill. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe strove to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are starting to become popular as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more money. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chili Powder Blend recipe.
