The History of Recipes

We are able to follow the history of written recipes back into the far past, at least as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the cooks of Roman times used many different spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example basil, fennel and parsley.

As we move on, we have two interesting books from the 1300s : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich people of the period.

Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an increase in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections.

By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking publications were in high demand, due to more people being able to read, increased leisure time and having more disposable income.
