The History of Recipes

Food historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, these, old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius tells us how the Romans used a good variety of herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise like bay, rue and parsley.

As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find a couple of recipe books which were published in the 14th Century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food eaten by the rich and powerful of that period.

In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created a surge in publications on food, most of which are now in private cookery archives.

By the arrival of the 20th century, cookbooks are highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and being a little richer.

The introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site.
