The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, in fact as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, these, ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful.

As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the cooks of Roman times made use of many herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today like bay, rue and dill.

Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an outbreak in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in academic collections.

The revolution that is television brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site.
