The History of Recipes

We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far back as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also recounts how the cooks of Roman times made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, fennel and dill.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused an increase in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries.

During the following few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes common in their social group.

The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now.
