The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced way back into ancient history, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of books which date from the 1300s ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of the period. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the holy land, such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted a torrent in manuscripts on food, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. Over the next few hundred years, the rich families of Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and recording the recipes of their peers. When we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are starting to become popular mostly due to better eduction, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
