The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are some interesting books from the fourteenth century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of that time. Over the next few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to offer the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe publications were greatly in demand due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money to spend. |
