The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were two interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of that time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new herbs and spices led to an outbreak in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
