The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into history, in fact as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into starters, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many herbs, including some familiar names such as basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices was responsible for a torrent in publications on food, most of which still exist in private libraries. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking books were greatly in demand mostly due to increased literacy, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
