The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` back into distant history, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. As we move on, we have some recipe books which were published in the 14th Century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich people of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy land, including rosemary and coriander. These new herbs and spices was responsible for an outbreak in books on cooking, some of which are now in academic collections. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were in great demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more spare time and having more money to spend. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
