The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions far back into history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. Moving on, we find two recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of the period. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes led to an explosion in books on cookery, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. During the next few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy competed to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
