The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes way back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. However, generally, these old cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`. As we move on, there were a couple of interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared for the rich people of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from Arab cooking, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an explosion in recipe publications, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brings us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
