The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, mostly, these old recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find two recipe books which date from the 1300s - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of the time. During the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookbooks were in great demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, leisure time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
